VH1

VH1 (originally an initialism of Video Hits One) is an American pay television channel that is owned by the ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks division of ViacomCBS. The channel was originally created by Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment, at the time a division of Warner Communications and the original owner of MTV, and launched on January 1, 1985, in the former space of Turner Broadcasting System's short-lived Cable Music Channel. The original purpose of the channel was to build upon the success of MTV by playing music videos, but targeting a slightly older audience than its sister channel. The name “VH1” comes from the first letters in the words “Video Hits One”; though this was not its original meaning. It was the last of the major video-based music networks to be launched, after MTV, VH1 Save The Music Foundation and BET. In the 1990s, VH1 continued to get more diversified, with programs such as Pop-Up Video, America's Funniest Home Videos (a joint production with ABC), interviews with various celebrities, and even “canned” programming like That Metal Show. In late 1999, VH1 debuted a new logo (which it would keep until 2013) and announced that it would start to appeal towards older viewers again by adding classic television shows to its lineup (such as I Love Lucy and The Wonder Years).
